Electricity is one of the most important power sources that we all use every day. But if it’s not properly managed it can cause serious injury and death.

Electrical hazards exist in contact with live parts, faults which could cause fire or explosions where an electrical fault is a source of ignition. Anyone who perform electrical work or near energised electrical equipment, including electrical installation, use and maintenance of electrical equipment need to be alert to the risks associated with its use.

As most of us will be spending our Christmas and New Year staycation or staying put to where we are, decorating the house with festive lights and other Christmas trimmings, we are more prone to electrical hazards if we don’t do the required checks. It is important to regularly inspect and test our electrical sockets, plugs, or any electrical equipment to identify damage, wear and any other electrical faults.

As a precaution, the do’s and don’ts of electrical safety will serve as a reminder for us of safe use of electrical appliances / devices / equipment.

• Never turn on appliances when electrical fault is visible.
• Never install cords under rugs where they can be fire hazard.
• Disconnect any appliances that sparks and have it repaired immediately.
• Use moisture resistant cords when outside.
• Always disconnect appliances before cleaning them.
• Switch off electricity where possible before working on the equipment.
• Ensure that that electrical equipment is in good working order (test and tag).
• Removed damage, unsafe electrical equipment or cords.
• Don’t overload power sockets.
• Check extension leads condition prior to use.
